A “thank you” to all veterans!

November 9, 2009 by Mary DeSilva

VetsEvery day should be Veterans Day.  Without the selfless actions of the men and women who serve in our military, Lord only knows what we would be doing now.  I came across Operation Uplink, where you can make a donation to buy phone cards for our troops overseas and hospitalized veterans  at home.  Please bookmark it and donate as often as you can.  And don’t forget to thank a veteran every chance you get.

Greenburgh Police Department Teams Up With 911 Cell Phone Bank To Benefit Abuse Victims And Senior Citizens.

The  Greenburgh Police Department has announced a partnership with the 911 Cell Phone Bank to collect used cell phones to provide emergency cell phones for victims of abuse and senior citizens.

The Greenburgh Police Department has teamed up with The 911 Cell Phone Bank to collect old cell phones in support of victims of abuse and senior citizens.  Under the agreement, the Greenburgh Police Department in an on-going effort will collect used cell phones in the community which will be turned over to the 911 Cell Phone Bank and re-marketed.  In return, they will build a bank of phones for emergency use as well as cash which will be used to fund various emergency and community service needs.

Residents who have unused cell phones are encouraged to drop them off at the Greenburgh Police Department Crime Prevention Unit, 188 Tarrytown Road, White Plains, NY 10607.  For more information call Police Officer Peter Dandreano at 914-682-5334.

James Mosieur, Director of the 911 Cell Phone Bank, said law enforcement agencies around the country are signing up to participate in the 911 Cell Phone Bank Program.  “We started the 911 Cell Phone Bank program in 2004, and it has already generated some 63 thousand phones, redirected over 200 tons of e-waste from landfills and provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in emergency cell phones for various law enforcement needs.  No need is greater than supporting law enforcement agencies who work so tirelessly on behalf of their local communities.”

Over 1500 law enforcement and community services organizations around the country have signed up to participate in the 911 Cell Phone Bank program.  The 911 Cell Phone Bank donates over 2,000 phones a month to law enforcement and other agencies for use as 911 emergency phones.

About the 911 Cell Phone Bank

The 911 Cell Phone Bank was created to provide an ongoing and readily available source of 911 cell phones and funds to meet unexpected and urgent needs of participating law enforcement and affiliated victims services agencies.  Since its inception, the 911 Cell Phone Bank has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars and thousands of cell phones for victims services organizations nationwide.  It is a nationwide program designed to maximize community cell phone donations and is partnered with the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA), the National Association of Triads, Inc. (NATI) and the National Organization for Victim Assistance (NOVA).  To learn more, visit 911CellPhoneBank.org.

Residents wishing to obtain an emergency cell phone, that only dials 911, can call Police Officer Peter Dandreano at 914-682-5334.

The Kohl’s parking lot in Yonkers will be the site of the annual Health and Safety Fair, brought to you by Blythedale bchChildren’s Hospital on Saturday the 17th, from 10am to 2pm.  Bring the entire family and learn about car seat safety and bicycle safety, fire prevention and escape, and experts will be on hand to show you how to make sure your child’s bike helmet fits properly.  Kids of all ages will enjoy seeing the fire trucks and the mounted police plus there’ll be a DJ, clowns and a special visit from the Yonkers FD’s Smoke House.  Be sure to stop by the WFAS table to say hi to Jay Michaels – he’ll be broadcasting live from 10am to noon – and spin our WFAS prize wheel for some cool goodies!

Thank you to Police Officer Peter Dandreano of the Greenburgh Police Department for this very important GPS safety information:

GPS

A couple of weeks ago a friend told me that someone she knew had their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard.

When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen.

The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew ho w much time they had to clean out the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents.

Something to consider if you have a GPS – don’t put your home address in it. Put a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you can still find your way home if you need to, but no one else would know where you live if your GPS were stolen.

Good stuff!

What Women Want…

September 30, 2009 by Mary DeSilva

Boy, that’s a loaded beginning, isn’t it?

First, I’m referring to our 5th annual event celebrating the best that Westchester has to offer women in our area.  WWW09From boutiques and salons, to healthcare and restaurants and everything in between, it’s a night geared exclusively to women.  Join us at Castle on the Hudson in Tarrytown on Thursday from 6-9 pm for What Women Want.  It’s a free event so bring your friends and plan on spending a couple of really fun hours browsing booths, sampling food, beverages and more.

Secondly, I’m thinking about happiness and success.  What makes YOU happy?  What is YOUR definition of success?  Ask ten women, you’ll get ten different answers.  I came across a very interesting test that doesn’t give you answers but could serve as a guide if you’re questioning what you do and why you do it.  As for me, I wouldn’t change a thing about my life – I’m happier as I’ve ever been and this test confirmed that I’m doing exactly what makes me happy and feel successful.  I found Marcus Buckinghams’ Strong Life Test on The Huffington Post.  Take it if you have a minute – you might be pleasantly surprised at the results, I was.  If you’re curious, my lead role is Creator and my supporting role is Teacher – right on the money!
